Stop the Bleed

The STOP THE BLEED® program seeks to translate battlefield medical success to the civilian sector by providing the general public with training that will enable them to stop or reduce life-threatening bleeding.

The overall goal of STOP THE BLEED® training includes: motivating the learner to act, to be able to differentiate life-threatening bleeding from non-life-threatening bleeding, and to promptly apply pressure to stop or reduce bleeding through direct pressure or via a tourniquet.

Activate the Emergency Alert System by having someone call 911 for all life-threatening injuries.

When there is substantial bleeding, you need to act immediately, uncontrolled bleeding can cause death within minutes.

When available, tourniquets should be considered the first line of treatment for life-threating bleeding from the arms or legs.

Instruction on how to properly apply a tourniquet and to recognize when a second tourniquet might be needed.

Hemostatic or medical gauze should be used if available. A shirt, towel or other material can be used if that is all that is available.

Gloves or other types of physical barriers should be used if available.
